Book Review: First Strike

The Book: First Strike by Jack Higgins
Reviewer: Trinidy B.

Is it a good book? Yes! It was very fast paced, never really a dull moment in the storyline.

Would you recommend this book? Yes! I would recommend it if you like a lot of action, adventure, and fighting.

What do you like about the book? Yes! There was a lot of action and that’s what I liked most about the book, it was great!

What do you dislike about the book? I liked everything about the book not anything wrong with it.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I can’t wait to read the other books, they are great.

Book Review: The River

The Book: The River by Gary Paulsen
Reviewer: Kavrin M.

Was it a good book? Yes! Great writer- he writes in a way that the story is like a movie in my head. The way Gary Paulsen puts things in each of his books are great.

Would you recommend it? Yes! If you like adventure and not knowing what’s going to happen next so you have to keep reading on, this is the book for you.

What did you like about it? Everything! How Brian explains everything to how the food tasted when he was in the wild then how it tasted when he got back home. Basically I liked everything from beginning to end.

What did you dislike? I really didn’t like when they asked Brian to go to the wilderness again, after he almost died after being there the first time, but it left me wanting to keep reading and find out what’s going to happen next.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. It kind of sucks that I’ve finished the first and second book, but then again I’m ready to see what happens in the next series.

Book Review: Mary, Bloody Mary

The Book: Mary, Bloody Mary by Carolyn Meyer
Reviewer: Joe P.

Was it a good book? It was a kind of a good book because the beginning was boring but when I was starting to go to the end of the book it was getting a little better.

Would you recommend it? It was a little romantic book because in the book they got married and the father had a baby with the mistress.

What did you like about it? Because when I read the book I knew it was a true book so that’s why I thought it was going to be a good book.

What did you dislike? I didn’t like the book because when I read it the book was kind of boring and there wasn’t that much going on in the book because I thought there was going to be more action in it.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. The story was a little sad because her father abandons her mother and then marries his mistress then has a child with her so Mary begins to lose faith in herself.

Book Review: First Meeting in Ender's Universe

The Book: First Meetings in Ender's Universe by Orson Scott Card
Reviewer: Morris H.

Was it a good book? YES!!! The writer caught my attention from the first word of the book and kept thought out the book.

Would you recommend it? YES!!! Whoever reads this book will be filled with excitement, laugher and adventure.

What did you like about it? The chapter named ENDER’S GAME.

What did you dislike? Everyone couldn’t go to school only the oldest two.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. Sad the book is over. Loved the book from start to ending. Fiction but it seems realistic.

Book Review: Tears of a Tiger

The Book: Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper
Reviewer: T'Shalla J.

Was it a good book? Yes, the author Sharon M. Draper is a wonderful writer. She writes about teens having problems and she is really makes you understand what’s happening.

Would you recommend it? Yes, I recommend this book to you. There is a lot of High School teen that you relate to, like: romance, drama and other emotions.

What did you like about it? How she talks about African Americans because you hardly find a book about African Americans.

What did you dislike? There is foul language sometimes.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. This story is very sad like the started to the end, so be prepared, and I hope you enjoy the book.

Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Final Straw

The Book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney
Reviewer: Vy T.

Was it a good book? Yes! This book is a very funny book; this book is the New York Times bestseller. The book is really easy to read.

Would you recommend it? Yes, after reading this book, it’s really funny and recommended for adults too even though it was written for kids.

What did you like about it? Greg, the character; writes in his diary about his life how he was an outgoing person, but he doesn’t have any friends. When his dad wants Greg to “man up” by not staying home and going out to make new friends. But Rodrick, Greg’s brother, interferes Greg and pushes him around.

What did you dislike? There is nothing I dislike about this book, because it’s a funny book and easily understood.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I really love this book and would like to read the first and second book. It’s a cute and easy book, has very funny situation. I’m sad because this is the last straw. I hope Jeff Kinney will write more books like this.

Book Review: Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: The Real Deal

The Book: Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: The Real Deal
Reviewer: Brittany Z.

Was it a good book? Yes. I’ve read chicken soup books and this one just fits the title “real deal”. Teens in my age group writing about their lives its interesting and to find stories that relate to me and my life it makes the book great.

Would you recommend it? Yes. Only if you love listening, well reading, other people’s lives and how they live.

What did you like about it? I like that each person has a story to tell whether it is short or long they have something to write about in their lives that happened.

What did you dislike? I don’t dislike the book. The only part I don’t like is that each chapter is similar and after a while the stories start to sound the same as one another.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. This book is great there are kids my age telling about their everyday lives and what they have gone through. I love that while reading I thought about my life, how I could relate to most of the stories. I could see myself while reading and having that in my head while I was reading was great to have and made the book all that more fun to read!!

Book Review: Ghostopolis

The Book: Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel
Reviewer: Cortez D.

Was it a good book? Yes! Doug TenNapel is a good writer and drawer. I don’t know if he did any other books because this is my first time reading his books. I love comic books but this one was the best. He made it like a real book.

Would you recommend it? Yes! If you really likes comedy and action this book is for you. This book has everything in it.

What did you like about it? Really, I like every part of this book. It’s really funny. That’s one of the main reasons I like it a lot.

What did you dislike? The ending was boring. I wanted his grandpa to see his daughter. And the action ended too quickly.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I am glad he is making more books because he is a great writer and drawer. I am going to tell more people about this book so they can read it.

Book Review: Jinx

The Book: Jinx by Meg Cabot
Reviewer: Alina G.

Was it a good book? Yes, it was a fantastic book! Meg Cabot (the author) writes other series like the Princess Diaries, The Mediator and several others.

Would you recommend it? Yes! This book is filled with a lot of mystery, romance, adventure and jokes about being in high school and having a lot of bad luck.

What did you like about it? I liked how the author had this mysterious older dude like Jinx, even though she was bad luck.

What did you dislike? I dislike how her own family didn’t even want to be near her because of her bad luck.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I thought the book was AMAZING! I loved how she began the story with Jinx having sooo much bad luck before she even gets into the house of the Gardiners (her aunt and uncle’s house).

Book Review: Dragon Ball Z, volume 8

The Book: Dragon Ball Z, volume 8 by Akira Toriyama
Reviewer: Michael S.

Was it a good book? I think Dragon Ball Z vol 8 is a good book because there is a lot of action and it keeps you on your toes.

Would you recommend it? I recommend this book to who ever like action and suspense. This is not a book for people who do like to read about fairy tale.

What did you like about it? Goku is finally here and Kuririn, Gohan and Vegta have to hold up till he lands. The Ginyu force is the strongest thing our heroes have seen before, they don’t stand a chance. Even the mighty Vegta struggles to hold up to the Ginyu force attacks. Is there any hope for them? Will the training that Goku has been though be enough for him to beat the undefeated Ginyu force?

What did you dislike? There isn’t anything I didn’t like about this book. It was a really good book but that’s my opion if you want to know read it yourself and find out.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I think that it was entertaining and had a lot of action in it.

Book Review: Mockingjay

The Book: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Reviewer: Mrs. Wilson

Is it a good book? Yes! Collins is a fantastic writer. Did you know she writes for television shows? It makes sense to me because I feel like I can really see what she's describing.

Would you recommend this book? Yes! But only after that person read books 1 and 2 in the series. Because really, what's not to love? There's survival, romance, and rebellion.

What do you like about the book? Frankly, I like every part that has Peeta in it. Katniss has to choose between two guys: Peeta and Gale. While Gale is okay and all, Peeta is...bliss. Sigh.

What do you dislike about the book? I didn't like all of the military strategy. I understand that it is a necessary part of the book since there's a war raging, but honestly, I couldn't care less. I wanted Collins to get back to the love story and what Katniss was going through personally.

Tell us your thoughts about the book. I'm sad the series is over. It's unlike anything else I've read and I'll miss the anticipation of waiting for the next book. I've heard from several people who did not like the ending of the book, but I did. I thought it was realistic, and to me, comforting.

One Book, One Twitter

Want to be part of a REALLY big book club? Read this interview with Twitter's founder...

From SLJ's Extra Helping 5/10/10:

Q: Did you see One Book, One Twitter as a book club or social experiment?
A: It’s not that it’s not a book club, it is. It’s a virtual book club. I was inspired by The Big Read, which is now an NEA program, and one program called One Book, One Chicago. Those are not so much about increasing literacy, but about social capital, about bonding and increasing different communities within a city. I read that we imagine we’re so hindered by geography, but we’re not. I thought, why do this by city? Let’s do this over Twitter. I was on Twitter a lot, and it seemed like a perfect vehicle for me. It was also a great social media experiment. Can we make these connections around the world? I want to increase mutual understanding.

Q: What’s been your favorite moment so far?
A: I was in Florida to give a talk and woke up early, and logged on to Twitter. I log on every couple of hours. Someone mentioned a line I had posted from the book “..language is a violence..”, and said that was the title of a Laurie Anderson song. And then someone else said that Anderson had actually borrowed it from William Burroughs. I thought this is amazing. There’s a wisdom of the crowd thing going on here.

Q: Some people have tweeted about the problem of spoilers — those reading ahead of the crowd, and posting their thoughts. Do you see it as a big issue?
A: People have used the hashtags I devised and moved on, creating their own hashtag systems. They’re obeying the rules, they don’t want to inflict spoilers on everyone. There’s a general spirit of humanity. I generally believe people are good.

Q: What’s been the biggest surprise?
A: Just how international it quickly became. We’ve got tons of Scandinavians. American Gods has a lot of Norse mythology. And Scandinavia is a place where people read in English a lot of the time. So none of that is surprising. But it’s very international, with people participating in the Middle East, Kuala Lumpur. It’s skewing in ways that are sort of predictable. I’m not seeing as much foreign language as I thought I would. The big victory is it's very clearly international.

Q: Will you move on to another book when this one’s done?
A: To some extent it’s up to the community. This took weeks of voting. I suspect people will follow my lead, and if I was going to say let’s wait until next summer… I can’t do this year round I’m too busy. These big reads are generally summer programs. We’ll see if people really want to do it again. There’s a possibility we’ll try to set it up as something permanent, get nonprofit status. I have a domain and haven’t started a website, but could start it as a foundation.

Q: Was your favorite book picked?
A: My favorite book is the one the crowd picked. I think it’s so incredible they came together and chose something so peacefully.

Q: So you’ve been pleased with the experience so far?I love these people, they’re so awesome. A: It’s all book people. They’re so nice. Even when they’re criticizing me, they’re so polite about it. Even when they come on my blog and tell me what a dunderhead I am. They’re so polite about it. I have really tried to include that spirit.

BookTrailer: Their Eyes Were Watching God

If you are going to be in AP English 3 next year, your summer reading selection will be Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I haven't read the book since I was in high school, so I listened to the audio to refresh my memory. I LOVED IT; therefore, I strongly suggest you listen to the audio--you can even follow along in the book if you want. The richness of the language is such an integral part of this book. Example of the text: "Naw, 'tain't nothin' lak you might think." Can you understand it? Sure, especially after you get into the rhythm of it. But for me, it's hard to hear the beauty of the words when I working through their meaning, know what I'm saying? Anyway, without further ado, here's the book trailer...
